About Base

Base is building the foundation of American power. The grid is the largest, most complex machine in the world. Yet it’s aging, struggling to keep up with today’s demand, and is unprepared for our electrified future.

Base is modernizing the grid as the first engineering-led, technology-driven power company. We’re deploying a nationwide network of distributed batteries that strengthens critical infrastructure and saves Americans money.

Our team of engineers, operators, creatives, technicians, and electricians design and deploy systems at speed. If you want to tackle the problem that will define this century and shape the future of American energy, now is the time. Join us.

About the Role

Over 70% of U.S. households are served by regulated utilities, making them essential partners in our quest for abundant, reliable, affordable power. At Base, our utility team builds the software that enables these partners to unlock the full potential of distributed energy resources: commanding fleets of Base batteries, integrating with wholesale markets, and shaping technical strategy for the future of energy. As a Software Engineer on this team, you’ll design and scale the products, APIs, and infrastructure that allow utilities to deploy, operate, and extract maximum value from their distributed fleets.

What You'll Do:

  • Gather requirements from utilities and internal stakeholders, and translate them into products that maximize value for both customers and Base.

  • Strategically surface facets of Base’s battery network through APIs, services, and data pipelines to enable new products for utility vendors.

  • Create and scale the systems that support both internal and external utilization of our utility-facing products.

  • Collaborate with market, hardware, deployment, and operations teams to ensure seamless integration between Base systems and utility platforms.

  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and release processes to ensure world-class reliability, quality, and velocity.

What We're Looking For:

  • A first-principles approach to software engineering with exceptional problem-solving skills.

  • Strong ability to analyze, work with, and present data. Comfort exposing and operationalizing data for partners and products.

  • Proficiency in a backend language (Go, Python, Java, or similar) and familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or similar).

  • Experience designing and building scalable systems and APIs that serve both internal and external stakeholders.

  • High agency and ownership: you thrive in ambiguous environments and drive projects from idea to production.

  • A passion for mission-driven work: your code will directly shape how utilities adapt to the future of energy.

Our Values

We’re building a winning culture and we’re looking for people who are up for the challenge. Here’s what we expect from day one:

  • In-Person Only: We work full-time in the office. No hybrid. No remote.

  • Challenge the Status Quo: Question assumptions. Fix broken systems. Principles > rules.

  • Move Fast: Focus on what matters, act quickly, and learn by doing.

  • Give & Get Feedback: Be direct, be humble. Challenge ideas–including your own.

  • Own the Outcome: Take full responsibility. Deliver results. No excuses.

  • Act Like an Owner: Be resourceful, mindful of impact, and committed to the business.

  • Be Decisive: Drive clarity. Make bold calls with imperfect info.

  • Bring the Intensity: This is not a 9-to-5. We're building something hard which requires real commitment.
